Poverty, lack of empowerment, and hard work are the words and images that invariably spring to mind when we think of the word “farmer”. The farmers of Banten’s forests depend on coconuts for their livelihood. There are currently 100,000 hectares of coconut plantations across the province. This film discusses the dilemma faced by the farmers as they try to eke out a living for themselves and their families with their limited resources. However, in the midst of this increasingly desperate situation, they have been able to survive, exploiting what nature has provided for them, with the assistance and support of the local forestry department, which has recognized the need for change and is providing the farmers with coconut processing machines.

Ning Opo Yo Wani

Length - 38:21
Producer - Purnomo Aji
Director -Junek
Produced by - Komunitas Pendukung Penyelamatan Hutan Jawa (KPPHJ)

This film takes a satirical look at the realities facing most of Java’s marginalised forest farmers. Sabar’s desire to participate in the management of state-owned forest land, which at first is greeted with quizzical scepticism and ngoyoworo by his friends, finally receives the support of everyone. However, in their struggle to realize their dream there remain a great number of obstacles to be overcome. The first failure, when they face off against their supervisor, makes them work harder to achieve their goal. The drama is peppered with Javanese nuances, and is acted by real forest farmers. Reflecting the question mark in its title, the film also ends with a big question about whether or not the struggle of Sabar and the other farmers to fight for their rights is achieved.
