Next Step

Work has now been completed to put in place a tiered, grant-making structure. This explicitly differentiates:

  • Grants for national policy advocacy and development.
  • Regional grant portfolios, consisting of block grants to CFs for work with civil society, and complementary technical assistance to local government.
  • Grants for the Ministry of Forestry and other Government of Indonesia agencies to engage with policy innovation and development on the ground.
  • Strategic small grants to support tactical activities including workshops and publications.

Working through the CFs also allows for more effective small-granting at the local level, with institutions not otherwise able to handle the complexity of a centrally-managed programme such as MFP.

Work continues to develop a dedicated strategy for each grant window through a process of regional and national consultations.

Learning from the experience of MFP1, systems are also being developed for:

  • Routine documentation, monitoring and evaluation; amongst other, the Partnership Appraisal/Project Approval Committee responsible for approving grants will play an active role in reviewing major grants and grant portfolios on a six-monthly basis.
  • Institutional development of partners, and in particular the CFs, including leadership, internal governance, and skills in fund-raising and asset management.

Multistakeholder Forestry Programme

The program objectives are to strengthen government and civil society partnerships at local and national levels to build capacity, empower community forest managers and develop and implement policy. In particular, the program will work to nurture and strengthen its network of Community Foundations in the regions, established with previous program support.
